The old software contract
Traditional software is built as a fixed product. Designers decide the structure once, then millions of people learn how to use it.
That made sense when software could not understand the person. AI changes what is possible.
People memorize menus, fields, workflows, and somebody else’s way of organizing work.
The same interface, sequence, and level of complexity is presented to everyone.
Context gets trapped inside products, so the person repeatedly explains who they are and what they need.
A new software contract
Adaptive software can adjust what it shows, how it explains, which approved tools it brings forward, how work is organized, and what it suggests next.
It does not need to rewrite itself without limits. The strongest model separates what must remain stable—identity, permissions, safety, data, and truth—from what can responsibly adapt.
Personalization changes the decoration. Adaptation changes the fit.
The adaptive loop
The loop is continuous, but it is not unconstrained. Every step operates inside explicit permissions, approved capabilities, stable records, and user correction.
Begin with permissioned context: the person, their goals, their role, their constraints, and the work in front of them.
Select approved tools, workflows, information, and support that fit the active situation.
Shape the experience so the right next step is clear without hiding control or changing the rules.
Learn from explicit correction, real choices, and outcomes—not from engagement alone.
Change the experience carefully as the person, their work, and their needs change.
The intelligence beneath the experience
Clicks, settings, and demographic segments can personalize a screen. They cannot explain the whole person behind the screen.
Life Design Technologies is developing the Internal World Model as the permissioned intelligence foundation beneath Adaptive Software: a way for AI to relate the present moment to the wider system of one person’s life.
What can adapt
Show what is useful now. Keep the rest available without making the person carry all of it at once.
Reorder approved steps and suggested next actions around the person’s actual situation and readiness.
Explain the same underlying truth with the level of detail, examples, and vocabulary that fit the person.
Bring forward the capabilities that match the work while preserving permissions, records, and human control.
Organize navigation, surfaces, and workflows around the context the person is currently operating within.
Offer support when it is useful, remain quiet when it is not, and let the person set the pace.
What it must not become
A responsive experience can be more useful. It can also become confusing, invasive, or manipulative if the objectives and limits are wrong. Human agency is an architectural requirement.
Core navigation, safety rules, permissions, and records of truth should remain stable and inspectable.
Adaptation should begin with information people deliberately share and can review, correct, or remove.
The goal is usefulness and agency—not compulsive engagement, conversion, or behavioral control.
Software can explain, organize, and recommend. The person keeps the consequential decisions.
From thesis to product
Adaptive Software is a direction under active development, not a claim that every product surface already changes in real time. We are introducing the architecture in stages, measuring fit, and protecting stable system boundaries as we go.
